02.12.07 Molly's 'Finding Ad'

Although it is illegal, thousands of girls are abandoned in China every year. The one-child policy, a cultural preference for boys, and the economics of Chinese farming lead mothers to leave their girls in places where they know the child will be found and cared for.

When a child is found, the authorities provide for a medical examination, place the child in an orphanage, and place an ad in a local paper giving notice that the child was found.

It appeared on page 6 of the July 15, 2006 edition of the Nanfang Farmer's Daily.
